USING CATALYST WITH YOUR WRITER – TRANSLATE AND EDIT:

 Download and Install the Java Runtime Environment.
 
You will need to have the Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software version j2re-1_4_1-win software installed in your browser in order for certain areas of the Blackboard course platform to function properly.  To install this software:

Click the Java - Get It Now button below.



 Enable Java in your browser.
 
  1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options. The Internet Options screen appears.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Click the Custom Level button. The Security Settings screen appears.
  4. Scroll down to Java Permissions and choose either Low, Medium or High safety
  5. Click OK. The Internet Options screen appears.
  6. Click OK.
 Switch to the Sun Java Runtime Environment.
 
  1. Open the Windows Control Panel by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel. The Control Panel appears.
  2. Locate and double-click Java Plug-in. The Java(TM) Plug-in Control Panel appears.
  3. Click the Browser tab.
  4. Under Settings, select the checkbox next to your browser.
  5. Click Apply to save your settings.
  6. Restart the browser.
 Enable Javascript for Your Browser.
 
  1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options. The Internet Options screen appears.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Click the Custom Level button. The Security Settings screen appears.
  4. Scroll down to Scripting, and enable Active Scripting and Scripting of Java Applets.
  5. Click OK. The Internet Options screen appears.
  6. Click OK.
 Set your browser cache.
 
  1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options. The Internet Options screen appears.
  2. Select the General tab.
  3. Under Temporary Internet Files, select Settings. The Settings screen appears.
  4. Select the Every Visit to the Page radio button.
  5. Click OK. The Internet Options screen appears.
  6. Click OK.
 Turn off Anonymous Logon.
 
  1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Click the Custom Level button.
  4. Scroll down to the User Authentication settings.
  5. Under Logon select the Automatic logon only in Intranet zone radio button.
  6. Click OK.
 Enable Cookies
 
  1. Select Tools then choose Internet Options
  2. Select the Privacy tab
  3. Select the custom setting
  4. Click the Advanced button
  5. Select Override automatic cookie handling
  6. Select Always allow session cookies
  7. Click OK to return to the Privacy Tab
  8. Click Apply then OK
 Disable Pop-Up Blocking for the Blackboard course platform.
 
While using Blackboard, you need to disable pop-up blocking for your Blackboard course platform server. Pop-up blockers work in the background while you browse the internet. When they detect a pop-up window that may be an unwanted advertisement, they automatically close the window. This can prevent the Blackboard course platform from performing properly.

To disable pop-up blockers for the Blackboard course platform:
  1. Search your hard drive for any software with "pop-up" in the name. Disable it or set your the following Blackboard course platform servers as allowed sites.
    a) http://thomson.blackboard.com
    b) http://webtutorsummer.blackboard.com
    c) http://stenograph.blackboard.com

    Examples of popular pop-up blocking applications include:
    a) Pop-Up Stopper
    b) Pop-Up Defender
    c) Pop-Up Zapper
     
  2. Pop-up blocking functions are included in some anti-virus, internet security, personal firewall, and browser programs. Disable the relevant setting in the program or set your the above Blackboard course platform servers as allowed sites. Examples of programs that include pop-up blocking functions include the following:
    a) Norton Internet Security
    b) Zone Alarm Pro
    c) Google Toolbar
    d) Yahoo! Toolbar
    e) MSN Toolbar
    f) AOL 8.0 and later
    g) Safari browser
    h) Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2
    I) ICQ Toolbar
    j) Mozilla browser
    k) Netscape browser
    l) Firefox browser

If you are still having trouble using the Blackboard cours platform, there may be a problem with your browser or other software on your computer. Read the following tips and troubleshooting information.

 Spyware and Deceptive Software.
 
Spyware, parasites, and other deceptive software can cause problems when using the Blackboard course platform or other websites. It is recommended that you check for, then uninstall or temporarily disable these types of software to eliminate problems when accessing the Blackboard course platform. To check your browser for spyware, parasites, and other deceptive software and for more detailed information, visit the Doxdesk page on parasites: http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite

To help you control these types of Internet programs that could run on your computer, you can download and install a spyware detection and removal utility, such as:

Check Your Computer for Viruses.
 
 Viruses can cause many problems with your computer. If your computer is infected with a virus, you may have trouble using the Blackboard course platform. Scan your computer to check for viruses. If you do not have a virus checker, it is strongly recommended that you get one and install it.  Two examples of well-known anti-virus programs are McAfee VirusScan and Symantec's Norton AntiVirus. Each of these companies also offer free scanning services:

 Keep Your Microsoft Windows Software Updated.
 
If you are using Microsoft Windows operating system, to prevent malicious programs from taking advantage of known security holes, make sure you have the latest updates from Microsoft:
  1. In Internet Explorer, from the Tools menu, select Windows Update.
  2. Follow the online instructions.
