MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION PROGRAM
Course Descriptions

*C100 - COMMUNICATIONS (3 CREDITS)
This is a college-level developmental writing and communications course that includes analysis of common writing criteria such as sentence structure, paragraph development, essays, and reports. Prerequisites: None.

C160 - Culture & Society (3 CREDITS)
As portrayed in the title of this course, the focus is on culture and society as a constant awareness process. Students will gain a theoretical framework of culture and society by using a variety of research techniques. This course is designed to aid the students in the development of the challenges in critical thinking and the knowledge of various aspects of society. Topics may vary according to current trends and present-day news, but they will include issues involving sports, entertainment, meteorology, and fine arts. Prerequisites: None.

MT100 - MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY/RELATED ANATOMY (3 CREDITS)
This is a medical vocabulary building course. The most common medical terms will be defined to include prefixes, root words, and suffixes. Students will be responsible for spelling, defining, and pronouncing these terms. The course will include basic instruction in the musculoskeletal system and in the body systems and functions. Students will receive instruction related to psychological and physical diseases and drugs and in the use of the Physician's Desk Reference. They will receive instruction in the methods of researching medical information such as names and descriptions of diseases and drugs. Prerequisites: None.

T110 - KEYBOARDING I - INTRODUCTION TO WORD PROCESSING (3 CREDITS)
Students will be placed in computer projects and books in accordance with previous training and experience. Students should be able to key using the touch system on the QWERTY keyboard. Using word processing software, students will learn the correct techniques of keyboarding and the use of word processing functions: making tabulations, setting up tables and charts, editing, and the basics of desktop publishing formatting. Prerequisites: None.

C110 - FOUNDATIONS OF LANGUAGE AND WRITING (3 CREDITS)
This is a college-level English course with emphasis on rhetoric, composition, expository writing, and speech. Students will study and develop proofreading and composition skills. Prerequisites: None.

TE200 - ADVANCED MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION I (6 CREDITS)
Students will develop a foundation in medical transcription utilizing software for the PC. Medical transcription projects will be transcribed from doctor-dictated tapes in the computer lab. Students will complete at least one transcription daily from dictated tapes. Grades will be based on daily homework, punctuation, keyboarding speed, and accuracy. Prerequisite: T110 and MT100. Co-requisites: TE250

TE250 - DISEASE PROCESSES FOR TEXT ENTRY I (3 CREDITS)
This is an advanced course in medical vocabulary and disease processes for students enrolled in the medical transcription program. Vocabulary is reviewed and studied by body systems. Units include the health record and anatomy, medical specialties, the history and physical, pharmacology, laboratory, dermatology, genitourinary, and gastroenterology. Co-requisites: TE200.

C210 - HUMAN RELATIONS (3 CREDITS)
Students in this course develop a real-world perspective to human relations. While learning basic sociological principles, students examine and analyze contemporary issues of human relations and build competencies needed for career and personal success in improving self-confidence, developing relationships, and maintaining a positive attitude. Critical thinking is emphasized through teamwork, role-playing, and applying writing skills. Prerequisites: None

TE220 - ADVANCED MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION II (6 CREDITS)
Advanced students will improve their skill, speed, and knowledge of medical transcription. Students will transcribe doctor-dictated tapes a minimum of eight hours every week. Grades will be based on daily homework, punctuation, accuracy, and transcription. Upon completion of this course, students will complete an internship and be prepared to enter the medical transcription field. Prerequisites: TE200 and TE250. Co-requisites: TE250

TE260 - DISEASE PROCESSES FOR TEXT ENTRY II (3 CREDITS)
This is an advanced course in medical vocabulary and disease processes for students enrolled in the medical transcription program. Vocabulary is reviewed and studied by body systems. Units include orthopedics, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, endocrinology, obstetrics, and gynecology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and neurology. Co-requisites: TE220.

T130 - MEDICAL KEYBOARDING (3 CREDITS)
Students will complete a variety of projects in T130. This course deals with aspects of medical word processing and office procedures. Students will learn to complete their projects using transcribing machines. Students should attain a keyboarding speed of 50 net words with five errors or less on two 5-minute timings to pass the course and 60 net words per minute with five errors or less for two 5-minute timings to receive an A. Prerequisites: T110.

TE290 - MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION INTERNSHIP (9 CREDITS)
Students develop skill transcribing health-care records with an emphasis on foreign accents. Students serve an internship in a medical transcription agency, firm, or department. Student interns should attempt to practice in two occupational environments such as: medical transcription agency, medical office, hospital, and/or legal, general office, or corporate setting. Transcriptions shall be produced for educational and grading purposes. Records will be maintained to verify the internship experience. Prerequisites: TE200 and TE220.
